Storm Surge

The  Carolina Hurricanes beat the Buffalo Sabres at home last night which prompted the creation of this poem:

Hockey Season

The time is now to drop the puck,
If you don’t have a ticket, well, you’re out of luck,
The hockey season is upon us, and the fan fever is hot,
The crowd noise erupts on a penalty shot,
The fans go wild when we score a goal,
Especially if it is on a "five-hole",
A hat trick will cause a flurry of hats on the ice,
Or sometimes a catfish is tossed like dice,
The Predators have that tradition; it is true,
While the Red Wings have thrown octopi since 1952,
Hockey has its own kind of excitement to share,
The Zamboni adds a flavor that does not compare,
To any other sport that we venture to view,
If you don’t watch hockey, I’m telling you,
Give it a try- you just may love the game,
I doubt you will find it boring or lame,
With a player in the penalty box, the power play is on,
There is plenty of athletic talent, brains and brawn,
In particular the goalie is fun to watch,
He is all padded up like a big Sasquatch,
It is exhilarating when they clash on the glass,
Or get a two-on-one with a tremendous pass,
I’m definitely no expert, I don’t really know the game,
But I love to watch Hurricanes hockey just the same.

PS-This poem was written BEFORE the "Bunch of Jerks" comment was made.  I love how the franchise has embraced that term and turned it into a positive.  Last night, when Evander Holyfield joined the storm surge, it was legendary. Go Canes!!!

Our Song

Walking on Sunshine

After weeks of rain and snow, the sun pops out,
I want to run, jump and shout,
The rays of the sun warm my soul,
To walk on sunshine is my goal,
When I walk on sunshine in my mind,
There is a lovely feeling of sweetness, I find,
The golden freshness of a freshly picked pear,
A gentle breeze blowing through my hair,
When I walk on sunshine, a smiley face appears,
If I’m sad or lonely, it wipes away my tears,
I like to walk on sunshine in my mind,
There is a lovely feeling of renewal, I often find,
Renewed hope and delight in everyday things,
Listening closely as a mockingbird sings,
Walking on sunshine makes me feel good,
Uplifting my spirit, as only it could,
One of these days when you see the sun shining,
Take a walk on sunshine, see a silver lining,
There can’t be a rainbow without any rain,
But walking on sunshine is my favorite refrain.

The Journey

Stepping Stones

Carefully, slowly and oh so steadily,
I balance myself on the rocks that are incredibly,
Slick and worn by the rush of the water,
A treacherous path from one side to the other,
Why do I venture into the stream?
To arrive on the other side is my dream,
The water is ice cold so I don’t want to slip,
I don’t want to experience a breath-taking dip,
But I love the sound of the water as it flows,
Sparkling and rumbling; it whispers to me as it goes,
Downstream, in a hurry, like there’s an urgency to move on,
It rushes with a vengeance from dusk until dawn,
I have to be a part of its journey, endlessly flowing,
I am drawn to its energy that keeps it going and going,
Doesn’t everyone want to make it to the other side?
What satisfaction it is sure to provide!
To stand and gaze back on the course that I took,
Gives me pause that this is a magical brook,
It had its deep waters and slippery slopes,
There were no safety nets or harnesses or ropes,
It was by faith that I walked upon life’s stepping stones,
There were steps of heartache, but I wasn’t alone,
My steps were guided to help me reach the shore,
And because of this, I will weep no more,
Beyond the rushing waters of my lifetime,
Is a place of eternal rest, totally sublime.

Time Machine

Recreate a Photograph

Here’s a fun idea you should try,
It is simple and sweet, like a lullaby,
If you have a camera, and most do,
It will be an easy task for you,
If you have an old photograph you treasure,
Of family members or siblings just being together,
Maybe it was taken sitting around the kitchen table,
At the beach, in the backyard, or at the horse stable,
On an adventurous trip or just doing an activity,
Playing and laughing, enjoying festivity,
A gathering of people doing what they enjoy,
A young child playing with a favorite toy,
Once you find the image you like best,
See if you can reproduce it; put out a request,
If you can get the subjects of the old photo reunited,
You can produce a similar one; You will be excited,
To see the photo capture how time has transpired,
Position everyone just like before; props may be required,
I did just that with our three sons perched beside the ocean,
In 1999 and in again in 2014, 15 years of love and devotion,
It was like a time-machine, set into motion.
