Simple Occurrences

Those Little Things

Have you ever caught a snowflake on your tongue?
Have you ever won a baseball game by only one run?
Have you ever seen a writing spider in the fall?
Have you ever heard a bobwhite bird call?
These are some simple occurrences that make me feel alive,
I need to acknowledge them to help me thrive,
An unexpected praying mantis on my window pane,
Or a bright green tree frog sitting quietly in the rain,
A giant turtle sunning on a fallen log at the pond,
These are the things of which I am fond,
In a world of pandemonium, it takes the chaos away,
It doesn’t take much to make my day,
It helps me to stop and notice the little things,
Like a ladybug’s tiny wings, or a mockingbird when it sings,
The beautiful sound as the church bell rings,
It’s all about the smallest of things,
I listen to the sound of a train off in the distance,
I am at peace, when I recognize its existence,
The little things that usually are overlooked or forgotten,
Like a field filled with soft, white bolls of cotton,
They are meaningful to me; they are my treasure,
They give me joy and it’s my pleasure,
To appreciate them - those little things,
And all the happiness they bring.
